We hate boring commercials. At Novel Idea, we’re of the opinion that “interesting,” “different” and “clever” will grab eyeballs and mindshare, while screaming at viewers will have them reaching for the mute button or simply changing the channel. But just as “good” is the enemy of “great,” the familiar is the enemy of new and different. Car dealers are an interesting breed. They are only as good as their last month’s sales figures. And in this economy, a low-margin business like auto sales has got to have the stock price of antacid-makers going through the roof. So it’s understandable that most general managers tend to fall back on the familiar (yelling) in advertising. We think there’s a better way. This spot represents one idea in that battle, something that injects a little wit and humor into a very familiar topic.
